Her friends in the city were all queer women of colour — Valencia-Svensson herself is of mixed Filipino-Canadian and Swedish-American heritage — and they were looking for a way to become politically active. Marching alongside her friends, as part of the first float devoted to queer women of colour at Toronto Pride, Valencia-Svensson felt she had found one. Among the group of friends Valencia-Svensson made that summer were a handful of other queer Filipinos living in Toronto.
