In years past, the last day of the semester ended with scores of Tufts University students running naked around the residential quad on campus, often in chilly, snowy conditions. The end of this semester was different. The "naked quad run," as it was called—a Tufts University tradition since the s— was banned by the university earlier in the yearand the university administration threatened students with semester-long suspension for participating in the event. In what they called "the excessively overdressed quad stroll," students wore costumes and absurd outfits as they walked slowly around the quad.

Naked Quad Run with hundreds of fellow students tonight!
No better way to celebrate the end of classes than with a naked run around the Tufts academic quad with your friends, dorm-mates, housemates, teammates, and classmates. Although I only got to participate in the event one year before the Tufts President shut it down, NQR will forever be a night to remember. Running with nothing but shoes, ear muffs, and gloves in degree weather while it was snowing, was liberating, fun, and helped get out all of my energy before sitting down and studying for finals.
Leaders save all the really tough decisions until right before they head out the door. The retiring president of Tufts University, Lawrence Bacow, announced in an op-ed in the student newspaper Monday that he was bringing the curtain down on the decades-old tradition of the "Naked Quad Run," citing physical and alcohol-related dangers that befall student participants in the annual event. Bacow said that when he became president a decade ago, he decided to try to "manage" rather than end the event, but that he had concluded over time that that was no longer possible.
